Expert Hair Styling Tips: Master Your Look

We had the pleasure of catching up with the renowned Richard Ward for his expertise in hair styling. His invaluable tips come at the perfect time, just as the summer season beckons. Find out how to create the ultimate chic bun here…

My advice for any hair when you’re wearing a hat is less is more. If you’re not careful when you’re putting your hair up, it can be very aging. The secret is to have the hair quite flat at the sides, quite tight to the sides, quite sculpted. It doesn’t have to be just a low bun but nothing too fussy.

So if you want something that’s slightly on the edge and something to look really chic especially when you’re wearing a big hat that’s taking over everything, you just want something that is very simple.

This is an easy way that you can do yourself at home:

1.     Divide the hair into a t-section.

2.     Put the back section into a ponytail with an elastic hairband.

3.     Very simply, bring both sides of the hair back with the brush.

4.     Smooth it down and spray the hair with hairspray.

5.     Wrap the hair around the ponytail and do the same on the other side.

This will create a low-slung bun, which is one of the most sought-after styles. It’s a chic way to accompany wearing a fabulous hat.

Hollywood hair tips :

One of the good things about hair tips for the red carpet and Hollywood hair in 2023 is that pretty much anything goes. So, we still have hints of beach waves but they are done in a certain way and I think most people you find on the red carpet has their hair up or maybe half hair up or tucked away.

What’s hot on the red carpet? You might think Hollywood hair is big hair and glamour, it’s not. If you want to be on trend, one of the hottest styles right now is so simple. It’s straight hair with the underneath tucked behind straight and quite flat to your head. It’s tied in a ponytail just underneath the back and the rest of your hair just falls forward. This hair style can be done in a parting, centre parting or no parting at all. I think it’s quite nice to do it on the side. I think a side parting is a little bit softer.

Top tips:

  • If you’re wanting to get the best results and the smoothest hair, a lot of people don’t realise you have to use a nozzle on the end of your dryer because it concentrates the heat and it makes the cuticles on the hair sit flat almost like a fish’s scales or slates on a roof. If you can get your cuticles to all fall in the same way then you have a better chance of getting smooth, shiny, frizz free hair.
  • When you’re putting wax into your hair, rub it into your hands like hand cream. Don’t just put a big blob on and not rub it in at all because you just big lumps of it in the hair. So, you have to rub it so you’ve almost got rid of it.
  • If you want to get a sleek look, argan oil is very good. The secret to this kind of look is that your hair has to appear really clean and sleek.
  • Don’t be afraid to use your straighteners to make your hair look silky smooth. It’s what I call expensive looking hair.
  • Celebrity, Hollywood, red carpet hair is always very groomed, it’s polished, and that’s the secret.
