A competition was held for children to create their own designs for Ella, a baby white elephant sculpture that stood at the Square throughout the month of June. Unveiled by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall at the beginning of the month, Ella and her 10ft tall beautifully painted mother Tara were part of an initiative from the Elephant Family and Maclaren to draw attention to the plight of the Asian elephant.
Over 2000 entries for the design competition were received. We are delighted to report that the winning young artist is Victor Ghose. Congratulations Victor! His enchanting design shows a deep blue Ella cloaked in stars. He says the inspiration came from the name of the mother Elephant Tara which means Star in Sanskrit.
In September, Ella will be painted by well-known artist Philip Colbert, and on October 27ths she will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s NYC with all proceeds going to Elephant Family.
