Tara the elephant will be making Duke of York Square her home for June. This is a central part of the latest initiative from The Elephant Family called ‘Travels to my Elephant’. Highlighting the plight of the Asian Elephant (90% have been wiped out over the past 100 years), an army of celebrity designed and driven tuk-tuks are racing across India to ‘the real’ Tara, the elephant adopted by Mark Shand (the charity’s founder).
On the Square there will be a programme of readings from high profile storytellers throughout June – more details coming soon, along with a competition to design ‘Ella’ a baby elephant who will appear by Tara’s side. Our restaurants will be giving out colouring-in competition sheets to children to design Ella’s outfit (to be posted into Tara’s post box, on her plinth). The winner will receive a host of elephant and art-related prizes, whilst a number of retailers will be stocking collectable, beautifully designed and painted miniature elephants – or a kit to paint one yourself!
